Fort McMurray, Alta. (July 3, 2015) – The Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) have acquired 95-born forward Connor McCallum (Strathmore, Alta.) from the Calgary Canucks. In exchange, the Oil Barons have traded 96-born forward Zach McNeill (Calgary, Alta.) to the Canucks.
McCallum rejoins the Oil Barons after starting the 2013-14 season with the team. The Oil Barons traded McCallum to the Canucks in November 2013. In 35 games with the Canucks last season, McCallum scored 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists) and 77 penalty minutes.
“As a new coach coming in, it’s nice to surround yourself with players that know your team and its expectations,” said Head Coach and General Manager Tom Keca.
“We were foruntanate to have Connor as an 18-year old and we’ve always thought of him as a late bloomer. As a 20-year old, we think Connor will play a leadership role on our team this year and be able to contribute offensively,” added Keca.
McNeill was acquired by the Oil Barons in a December 1 trade with the Calgary Mustangs. In 57 games between the Oil Barons and Mustangs last season, McNeill recorded 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists) and 194 penalty minutes.
“Zach’s a tough player that plays with a lot of heart,” said Keca. “We’d like to thank him for his contributions last season and we wish him the best in his future hockey career.”
