Fort McMurray, AB — May 26, 2025 — The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are pleased to announce that Sam Klassen will return to the organization as Head Coach and will also take on the role of Interim General Manager, effective immediately.
Klassen, who previously served as the team’s head coach for the 2024-25 season, returns to the bench following a brief leave of absence. After an internal review and discussions with key stakeholders, the Oil Barons organization is confident in Klassen’s ability to lead both the on-ice and operational aspects of the team moving forward.
“Sam has earned the respect of our players, staff, and the wider Fort McMurray community,” said Andrew Boutilier, Team Advisor. “We believe his leadership and vision will guide this team in a positive direction as we prepare for the upcoming season.”
Klassen expressed appreciation for the opportunity to return in an expanded role, “I am grateful for the support from the organization and the community,” said Klassen. “It’s an honor to return behind the bench and now contribute in a greater capacity as Interim General Manager. I am excited to get back to work with our staff and players as we build toward a competitive season.”
The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are preparing for an exciting 2025-2026 season including an upcoming Top 40 Camp, a very busy recruiting period ahead of next season, and Klassen will immediately begin fulfilling his responsibilities in both roles.
