The season is over for the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.

The Spruce Grove Saints and MOB played a game for the ages Tuesday night at the Grant Fuhr Arena in Spruce Grove but only one team could come out alive.

On this particular night though, the Saints came out ahead, scoring with 17.2 seconds left in overtime to capture game seven of their Alberta Junior Hockey League North Division Final.

“It was a classic,” said MOB head coach Gord Thibodeau. “Two great teams (it’s) unfortunate someone has to lose. We gave everything we had; that’s the bounces of the game.”

The Saints opened the scoring five minutes into the first period as Carson Samoridny scored his fourth goal in the past three games to put the Saints up early. Kevin Miller tied things up just over ten minutes later to keep the teams even after 20 minutes.

In the second period, it was the Oil Barons chance to take their only lead of the game. Kevin miller scored 14:41 into the frame to momentarily give the MOB the lead in the game. Paul Lovsin had other ideas though as just 1:43 later, the rookie forward beat Tanner Jaillet to tie the game up after forty minutes.

After a scoreless third period, the series that had everything went to overtime in game seven. While both teams threw everything they had at each other, the Saints were the only ones to strike.

Parker Mackay, who had only scored in game one of the series prior to game six, scored his third goal in the past two games to elevate the Saints to victory.
