Fort McMurray Oil Barons Retire No. 16 in Honour of Travis Gladue

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are proud to honour one of the most accomplished players in fanichise history, officially retiring the No. 16 worn by all-time leading scorer Travis Gladue.

A proud member of Sucker Creek First Nation, Gladue wore the Oil Barons jersey from 1996-2001, helping lead the organization through one of the most successful eras in its history.

From the moment he arrived in Fort McMurray, Gladue made an impact. In his first season with the MOB, he helped the Oil Barons capture the 1997 AJHL Championship.

Just a few years later, Gladue was a key member of the legendary 1999-2000 Oil Barons team. That season, Fort McMurray captured the AJHL Championship and Doyle Cup before competing for the national championship on home ice.

The Oil Barons defeated the Rayside-Balfour Sabercats 2-1 to become National Junior A Champions, creating one of the most memorable moments in the history of hockey in Fort McMurray.

Gladue’s individual accomplishments remain equally remarkable. Over five seasons with the Oil Barons, he recorded 122 goals, and 262 regular-season points. More than 25 years after his final season with the club, Gladue remains the Fort McMurray Oil Barons’ all-time career leader in both goals and points.

His legacy, however, extends far beyond the record book. Gladue represented the Oil Barons, Fort McMurray and Sucker Creek First Nation with pride throughout his career. His commitment to his teammates and his community, along with his contributions to multiple championship teams, helped establish a tradition of excellence that remains an important part of the Oil Barons organization today.

Few players have left a mark on the franchise quite like No. 16.

As part of the special on-ice ceremony, Gladue was joined by his family and members of the Oil Barons community as his No. 16 banner was unveiled. An honour song was performed by Darren Mercredi of Mikisew Cree First Nation, with Oil Barons alumnus Brent Upshall taking part in the unveiling.

With No. 16 now raised to the rafters, Gladue’s place in Oil Barons history will forever be recognized alongside the other greats who have helped shape the organization.

Congratulations, Travis Gladue, on an extraordinary career and a lasting legacy with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.
