FORT MCMURRAY, AB (December 10, 2014) – Brendan Holterhus had the winner early in the second period, and the Spruce Grove Saints squeaked past the Fort McMurray Oil Barons (19-14-3) 2-1 at the Casman Centre on Wednesday night.
The Saints got on the board first, when Travis McEvoy banged home a carom off the endboards, giving Spruce Grove the 1-0 lead through 20.
The Barons got off to a strong start in the second, when Isaac Ceh (Chicago, IL) took a feed from Austin Holmes (Calgary, AB), skated into the slot, and buried one five-hole on Brett Zarowney, tying things up at 1.
But the Saints roared back 45 seconds later, when Brendan Holterhus blasted one over Zach Fortin's (St. Jérome, PQ) left shoulder, giving the Saints a lead they wouldn't give up the rest of the way.
Zarowney needed 21 saves for the winner, while Fortin made 36 saves in a hard luck loss.
The Barons loss combined with a Sherwood Park win put the Barons one point back of the Crusaders for third place in the division, with one game in hand.
Up next for the MOB, the Crusaders come to town for back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday night (December 12-13).
