FORT MCMURRAY, AB (October 17, 2014) – Dallas Bergstrom scored on a third period powerplay, and the Camrose Kodiaks (11-1-2) held on to beat the Fort McMurray Oil Barons (8-7-2) 2-1 on Friday night.
The Kodiaks lead off the scoring in the first period, when Braeden Salverda scored with 56 seconds left to give Camrose a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes.
After killing a penalty off at the beginning of the second, the Barons found themselves on a powerplay six-and-a-half minutes into the period.
19 seconds later, Mitchell Vanderlaan (Hanwell, NB) converted on a speedy solo rush up the right wing side, tying the game at 1.
With 5:25 left in the second, Tyler Dea (St. Albert, AB) and Adam deChamplain took coincidental unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, the start of some bad blood between the teams that carried over to the third period.
Just past the twelve-minute mark of the final frame, Shawn Weber (Lloydminster, AB) and Scott Ferguson got caught up in some after-the-whistle roughousing, that was deemed enough to warrant fighting majors.
That escalated to include all ten players on the ice getting involved, and game misconducts for both Jackson McKinstry (Calgary, AB) and Stefan Danielson, along with Weber and Ferguson.
That seemed to spark the Kodiaks, who drew a powerplay 48 seconds later, which Bergstrom converted on to give Camrose a lead they wouldn't give up.
Zach Fortin (St. Jerome, PQ) made 34 saves in a tough losing effort for the Barons, while Devin McDonald picked up the win for Camrose.
Up next for the Barons, they're back at home on Saturday night, October 18th, where they host the Calgary Mustangs (3-10).
It's a re-match of a game last Sunday, October 12th, which saw the Mustangs pick up a 3-2 shootout win.
