Fort McMurray, Alta. (June 17, 2015) – The Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) are pleased to announce Tom Keca as the team’s new Head Coach and General Manager.
“I am excited to join an outstanding organization, in a community that has been my home for a long time,” said Keca. “The Oil Barons are well respected in Alberta and across Canada – I look forward to continuing that tradition.”
The 44-year old rejoins the Oil Barons after serving as an assistant coach with the team for nine seasons, from 2000-2006 and 2011-2014. Keca also served as head coach of the Lloydminster Bobcats for four seasons from 2006-2010.
Keca’s experience with the Oil Barons dates back to the early 1990s, where he served as a player with the team.
“Growing up in Fort McMurray and playing for the Oil Barons was an incredible experience,” said Keca. “I am proud to become the first person to play minor and junior hockey in Fort McMurray, and lead the Oil Barons as head coach and general manager.”
After finishing his junior ‘A’ hockey career with the Oil Barons in 1993, Keca went on to play hockey in Europe and later the University of Lethbridge, where he obtained a Bachelor of Education Degree.
In 2000, Keca returned to Fort McMurray to serve as an assistant coach with the Oil Barons and lead a hockey academy for local high-school students.
“As a true Fort McMurrayite, Tom brings a lot of personal knowledge and experience to the Oil Barons,” said Northern Alberta Athletic Association (NAAA) and Oil Barons President Dave Fitzgerald.
“Tom’s knowledge of Western Canada’s midget and junior leagues will help the Oil Barons in recruiting efforts for years to come,” said Fitzgerald. “We look forward to working with him to prepare for the upcoming season.”
