Oil Barons sign Kinniburgh to Letter of Intent

Fort McMurray, AB (March 8, 2017) – The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are pleased to announce that the team has signed 2000-born defenceman Gunner Kinniburgh (Lethbridge, AB) to a Letter of Intent for the 2017/18 season. An AJHL Letter of Intent protects a player as a member of a respective team.

Kinniburgh, 17, currently plays for the Lethbridge Hurricanes Midget AAA team. In 33 games this season, Kinniburgh has 10 points (three goals, seven assists) and 35 penalty minutes. Kinniburgh has also appeared in two games as an affiliate with the Oil Barons this season and picked up his first AJHL goal in his first game on November 3 against the Grande Prairie Storm.

“It was fun to play at a higher level,” said Kinniburgh. “It was a big step and I was able to get one in my first game.”

Kinnibugh described the Oil Barons “as a really great organization” and spoke highly of both the team and Head Coach and General Manager Tom Keca.

“A great group of guys and a great coach,” said Kinniburgh. “Tom invited me to main camp last fall and I had a really good experience.”

“Gunner’s a highly sought after prospect that has some size and skating ability,” said Keca.

“He affiliated with us this year and provided us with a solid presence on the back end. As a coaching staff, we think Gunner has a lot of upside and will be a welcomed addition to our hockey club.”
