Fort McMurray, Alta. (July 14, 2017) – The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are excited to announce the signing of four 1999-born players to letters of intent ahead of the 2017-18 Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) season. An AJHL letter of intent protects a player as a member of a respective team.
1999-born forwards Jackson Verstraete (Calgary, AB) and Tyler Alger (Calgary, AB) will join the MOB next season. Verstraete and Alger played for the Calgary Midget AAA North Stars last season. As team captain of the North Stars last season, Verstraete recorded 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists) in 30 games, while Alger recorded 28 points (9 goals, 19 assists) in 32 games. Alger also appeared in two games with the MOB as an affiliate last season, where he recorded a goal and an assist.
1999-born defenceman Blake Howard (Coto de Caza, CA, USA) will also join the MOB this season. In 32 games with the Anaheim Junior Ducks last season, the 6’3” defenceman registered 14 points (5 goals, 9 assists) in 32 games.
1999-born goaltender Chris Curr (St. Albert, AB) will also join the MOB. In 21 games with the St. Albert Midget AAA Raiders last season, Curr recorded a 2.53 goals against average and a .924 save percentage. Curr also started one game with the MOB as an affiliate player last season, picking up his first AJHL win in that start.
To date, the MOB have signed five players to letters of intent for the 2017-18 AJHL season. In March, the MOB announced the signing of 2000-born defenceman Gunner Kinniburgh (Lethbridge, AB).
