Oil Barons Game Preview (Sep 26 & 27)

Story Coming In:

It was a weekend split to start the season for the Oil Barons. Six different goal scorers found the back of the net for the MOB, while Logan Cunningham turned aside 76 of 80 shots he faced and posted the league’s first shutout of the season. Highlights included local product Jaggar John netting his first career AJHL goal, while Cody Nordstrom and Willem Terwoord were defenders who found the back of the net. Fort McMurray made a couple of changes to their roster before the weekend. Gone are Trennen Redlick and Chase Campbell. The Oil Barons do add Jaxen Gauchier, a forward from Peavine, Alberta who played last season with the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos. In 48 games of work with the Broncos, Gauchier put up seven goals and ten points.

View From Devon & Whitecourt:

Just like last season, the Devon Xtreme opened their campaign with a weekend split against Bonnyville. Captain Xander Schulte and newly acquired forward Stefan Serediak led the charge with three points each. Meanwhile, veteran goaltender Preston Lewis played both games last weekend. Last season, Devon went 1-2 against the Oil Barons at GFL Twin Arena. The Xtreme were a perfect 2-0 against Fort McMurray during the preseason, which saw rookie defenceman Darius Hordal tally a hat trick. The Whitecourt Wolverines put the league on notice with an opening weekend sweep of the Grande Prairie Storm. Their captain Jalen Biachet paced the Wolverines with five points in the two games, while veterans Ethan Short and Kyle Tucker had four points each. Newly acquired Tyler Pretty fit into Whitecourt’s roster seamlessly with three points over the weekend. In advance of this weekend, the Wolverines added WHL experience to their group in defenders Jager Gugyelka and Lachlan Staniforth.
