Oil Barons Game Preview (Feb 8 & 9)

Story Coming In:

The Oil Barons are coming off their most productive two game stretch since March 20th and 26th, 2021 where the MOB put up 16 goals over two games. In their two victories over Olds, Fort McMurray saw all but one player on the scoresheet, while also seeing Cade Petersen nab back to back game winning goals and Trennen Redlick scoring with first career AJHL goal. The Oil Barons also earned their first win when giving up four or more goals, as well as their first win with a goaltender not named Vincent Filion. Now, Fort McMurray enters the weekend five points behind Lloydminster for third place, with the Bobcats holding two games in hand, and a comfortable nine points ahead of Bonnyville. With their second four games in five nights through southern Alberta stretch of the season, the Oil Barons will look to better their 2-2 trip back in November.

View From Calgary & Canmore:

The Canucks and Eagles are the main combatants for first place in the AJHL South Division. With only three points separating the two teams, the difference between first and second could determine an easier playoff opponent. The Canucks are led by their offence, which is ranked first in the league. With 24 goals in their last three games, the Centennial Cup hosts look to reel in the Eagles, while being led by the likes of Jack Plandowski, Bowden Singleton and Jayden Joly. Canmore has taken flight winning seven of their last nine games. The Eagles success is based in being able to strike first, having scored the first goal of hockey games a league high 28 times and winning 21 of those games. Captain Rhett Dekowny leads the offence along with local product Owen Jones, while Kayden Rawji is a point a game player and adding sandpaper to his lineup. The Eagles have also been receiving excellent goaltending. Alex Scheiwiller has the third most wins in the league and the third best save percentage, while Hudson Sedo is tied for the most wins by a rookie goalie.
