OIL BARONS ANNOUNCE HOCKEY OPERATIONS UPDATES

Fort McMurray, AB — August 12, 2025 — The Fort McMurray Oil Barons announced today several updates to the club’s hockey operations staff, including the promotion of Matt Liggett to Associate Coach, the hiring of Jesse Mattson as Assistant General Manager & Coach, and the addition of Cody Hryniw as Goalie Coach.

Matt Liggett – Associate Coach
Liggett earns a promotion to Associate Coach after serving as the Oil Barons’ Skills Coach last season. Known for his work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to player development, Liggett made an immediate impact in his first year with the team.

“Coach Matt has earned this promotion and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue working alongside him for another season,” said Oil Barons General Manager & Head Coach Sam Klassen. “His work ethic, interpersonal skills and hockey IQ brought immediate value to our program last year. Whether it’s staying on the ice after practice for extra skill work or putting in extra hours in the office for one-on-one video sessions, Matt consistently goes above and beyond for our players. He’s also actively involved in the local hockey community, with a strong focus on developing homegrown talent. I’m excited to see Matt take on this new role as we head into the 2025–2026 season.”

Jesse Mattson – Assistant GM & Coach
Mattson joins the Oil Barons behind the bench and in the front office after serving as the team’s Saskatchewan scout last season. With a proven track record in player evaluation and relationship building, Mattson will play a key role in both coaching and management.

“After just one season as our Saskatchewan scout, Jesse quickly proved his ability to identify talent and build strong relationships with prospects throughout the recruiting process,” said Klassen. “As I stepped into the role of General Manager, I knew I needed someone in our second Assistant Coach position who could also support key GM responsibilities—and Jesse is the perfect fit. His passion for the game, strong relational skills, and exceptional administrative abilities make him an invaluable asset as we head into the season. He’ll play a crucial role in our day-to-day operations and help shape the long-term success of our organization.”

Cody Hryniw – Goalie Coach
Hryniw returns to Fort McMurray to lead the Oil Barons’ goaltending development and recruiting efforts for the upcoming season. Hryniw has prior AJHL coaching experience with Fort McMurray and Drayton Valley.

“We’re excited to welcome Cody Hryniw back to Fort McMurray to lead our goalie development and recruiting this season,” said Klassen. “His strong communication skills, detailed coaching philosophy, and his past experience in the AJHL will bring immediate value to our program.”
