Oil Barons Acquire Forward Matthew Gerke

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons have acquired Matthew Gerke from the Selkirk Steelers of the MJHL in exchange for future considerations.

Gerke, originally from Edmonton, AB, is a 2002 born forward who has spent the previous 2 seasons with the Selkirk Steelers. In those two seasons, Gerke amassed 32 points (18 goals and 14 assists) in 44 regular season games. The season prior to that he played in 8 games for the Bonnyville Pontiacs.

“Very happy to add Matthew to our depth of our forward group. He is a player that is familiar with our league starting out in Bonnyville when he was 18 and has played the last two years in Selkirk. He was a highly touted guy coming out of U18AAA being a Calgary Hitmen draft pick. For us to add another big, heavy body up front that is 6’2, 185 lbs we felt we needed to jump on it. When we go into tough rinks on the road Matt will be able to help us. He is reliable down the middle, is good on draws, can play in every situation for us, and brings stability on both sides of the puck for us. On top of that, he has proven he can score and be a tough body to contain in the offensive zone in protecting and being tough to knock off pucks. We like that Matt can check off a lot of boxes for us and brings 3 years of Jr. A experience to our team.” said Head Coach and General Manager Adam Manah.

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons would like to welcome Matthew and his family to the organization.
