Fort McMurray, AB — June 4, 2026 — The Fort McMurray Oil Barons have acquired 2006 born defenceman Simon Martin from the Weyburn Red Wings, completing the trade made last season that sent the rights to Rylan Pearce to Weyburn.
Martin joins the Oil Barons after an impressive 2025-26 season in the SJHL, where he recorded 3 goals and 25 assists for 28 points in 47 games with the Weyburn Red Wings. The right shot defenceman also brings a wealth of experience, having appeared in 119 career Junior A games.
Known for his skating ability, puck moving skills, and strong presence on the back end, Martin is expected to play a key role on the Oil Barons blue line heading into the 2026-27 AJHL season.
“Simon is a great skating, right-shot, puck-moving defenseman who will add valuable experience and stability to our blue line. Beyond his abilities on the ice, he brings a veteran presence and outstanding character to our dressing room. Every reference we received spoke highly of the person Simon is, and it was clear that he is someone who will positively impact both his teammates and the organization. We are thrilled to have Simon join our team and look forward to the contributions he will make both on and off the ice next season.” — Jesse Mattson, Assistant General Manager & Assistant Coach
Martin becomes the latest addition to an Oil Barons roster that continues to take shape ahead of the 2026-27 season. His experience, leadership qualities, and ability to contribute at both ends of the ice will make him an important piece of the team’s defensive group.
The Fort McMurray Oil Barons would like to welcome Simon and his family to the organization and look forward to seeing him in a MOB uniform this fall.
