FORT McMURRAY, AB (January 26, 2015) – The Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League would like to thank the nearly 1,600 people who turned out for Friday night’s home game and helped raise more than $15,000 for the Fellowship Baptist Church Soup Kitchen.
The game’s intermission Frisbees for Food promotion raised more than $5,000 in frisbee sales, as fans littered the ice with frisbees aimed at the centre faceoff circle, with the three closest winning prizes including a WestJet flight anywhere the airline flies.
In addition, various community leaders and citizens pledged donations to the Soup Kitchen on a per-goal basis, totalling approximately $2,000 per Oil Barons goal scored.
With the MOB lighting the lamp five times in a 5-4 win over the Okotoks Oilers, that added another $10,000 to the tally.
The total shattered the $3,500 that was raised at last year’s event.
The Soup Kitchen serves an average of 75 full course lunches every week to those in need in the Fort McMurray community. Frisbees for Food has become an annual way for the Oil Barons to help it raise the funds it needs to keep the program operating.
