The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are pleased to announce that 20 year old defenceman Matt Szpak (Fort McMurray, AB) has committed to attend and play for the Iowa State Cyclones for the upcoming 2012-2013 season. The Cyclones play in the ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association).
Matt was able to complete his junior career in his hometown of Fort McMurray. Over his time with the Oil Barons, Matt played 172 games accumulating 15 goals and 32 assists in the regular season and playoffs.
He was re-acquired prior to the season due to his physical play and solid defensive ability. Matt was very valuable to the team demonstrating a passion and commitment to the team values while playing for the Oil Barons. He was counted on by the staff to play in all situations.
The Oil Barons organization would like to congratulate Matt and his family and wish him all the best in his future endeavours both academically and athletically.
Matt becomes the 9th Oil Baron to secure a scholarship to a post-secondary institution this year.
