Fort McMurray Oil Barons announce return of Tom Keca as Head Coach/General Manager, submit bid to host 2027 Centennial Cup
Fort McMurray, AB — May 25, 2026 — The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are pleased to announce the return of Tom Keca as Head Coach/General Manager, alongside the addition of former Oil Barons captain Brandon Ralph as Assistant Coach.
Keca returns to the Oil Barons following a long and respected history with the club, including serving as General Manager and Head Coach from 2015 to 2019. One of the most recognizable figures in Fort McMurray junior hockey, Keca has spent decades with the organization as both a player and coach. His career record with the Oil Barons is 128 wins, 85 losses and 27 ties.
“I am incredibly honored and excited for the opportunity to return home to coach the Oil Barons. I would like to thank the Board for placing their trust in me. I understand the important role the Oil Barons play within the Fort McMurray community, and that responsibility is something I take very seriously,” said Keca.
“Our goal is to build a championship-caliber team that our community and fans can be proud of. As an alumnus, the phrase ‘Once a Baron… Always a Baron’ has always meant a great deal to me. I am also looking forward to working alongside Brandon Ralph, a fellow alumnus whom I’ve had the privilege of coaching in the past. Together, we are committed to bringing the passion, dedication, and work ethic that our loyal supporters deserve.”
Joining Keca behind the bench is Brandon Ralph, a former Oil Barons captain and longtime member of the organization who has most recently served as a Northern Alberta scout for the team. Ralph brings strong ties to the program, high-level playing experience, and a strong understanding of the Oil Barons culture.
“I would like to thank President Andrew Boutilier and the Oil Barons organization for this opportunity,” said Ralph. “My family and I are grateful and excited to be Oil Barons once again.”
A Fort McMurray product, Ralph played multiple seasons in the WHL before returning to the Oil Barons, where he served as team captain. He has also spent more than a decade working with player development programs across northern Alberta, coaching and mentoring athletes at multiple levels.
During his previous tenure as Head Coach, Keca helped lead a significant turnaround for the organization, guiding the Oil Barons from a 30-point season and seventh-place finish in 2015-2016 to one of the top teams in the Alberta Junior Hockey League the following season. Under his leadership, the team earned a record of 44 wins, 13 losses, and 3 ties in 2016-2017 and competed for first place in the AJHL North Division.
Keca was recognized by his peers as the 2016-2017 AJHL Coach of the Year, becoming the first Oil Barons coach to receive the honour since Bob Murray in 1991-1992.
“Tom knows this league, he knows this community, and he knows what it takes to build a competitive hockey team,” said Andrew Boutilier, President of the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. “He’s had success here before, and we’re excited to have him back leading our group.”
“Adding Brandon to the coaching staff is another important piece for our organization,” said Boutilier. “He understands what the Oil Barons are about, has strong relationships in the hockey community, and brings great experience working with players and helping them develop.”
Keca and Ralph will be supported by returning assistant coach Jesse Mattson, who will round out a strong coaching staff focused on player development and building a competitive team.
The coaching announcement comes as the Oil Barons organization continues building toward what is expected to be an exciting and important chapter for MOB hockey.
The organization has officially submitted a bid to host the 2027 Centennial Cup, Canada’s National Junior A Championship.
The Centennial Cup is the premier championship tournament for Junior A hockey in Canada, bringing together the top teams from across the country to compete for a national title. The event draws national attention, showcases elite talent, and delivers significant economic and community impact for host cities.
If selected, Fort McMurray would welcome teams and fans from across Canada for one of the biggest events in Canadian junior hockey.
“The return of Tom and Brandon is an important step as we continue building for the future of this organization,” said Boutilier. “At the same time, submitting a bid for the Centennial Cup reflects the confidence we have in our community, our fans, and the future of Oil Barons hockey. We believe Fort McMurray would be an outstanding host for a national championship event.”
Additional announcements and developments related to the 2026-2027 season will be shared in the months ahead.
