Fort McMurray, AB — June 30, 2025 — The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are proud to announce that forward Carter Schmidt has committed to NCAA Division II program Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, B.C.)
“We’re very excited for Schmidty and the opportunity he has to continue both his education and hockey career with the Red Leafs,” said Oil Barons Head Coach Sam Klassen. “This past season, he faced significant adversity with injuries, but his resilience and determination to battle through for the team was inspiring. Down the stretch, Schmidty was playing his best hockey, and his commitment to SFU is a testament to his hard work and perseverance. Coach Coletta is getting a player with a unique blend of grit and offensive talent, and I have no doubt Schmidty will make an immediate impact on the program.”
Schmidt was a key contributor over his two years with the MOB suiting up in 99 regular season games recording 37 goals and 42 assists for 79 points.
“I’m grateful for my time with the Oil Barons,” said Schmidt. “Thank you to everyone in the organization for the memories, and to everyone who has helped me along the way!”
The Oil Barons would like to congratulate Carter and his family on this exciting accomplishment and wish him continued success as he embarks on the next chapter of his hockey and academic career with Simon Fraser University.
