Barons captains help kick off flu shot campaign

FORT McMURRAY, AB (October 27, 2014) – Fort McMurray Oil Barons captain Jetlan Houcher (Paradise Valley, AB) and alternate captain Mitch Vanderlaan (Hanwell, NB) helped to kick off Alberta Health Services’ influenza immunization campaign on Monday afternoon at Macdonald Island Park.

The two Barons were the first to receive the vaccine, with the rest of the team scheduled to be immunized this week.

Houcher and Vanderlaan are also participating in AHS’ new “Influenza Champion” program, where vaccine recipients are asked to share their stories at www.albertafluchamps.ca.

“I felt it was important to get the flu shot to maintain my own personal health throughout the hockey season and not miss any games,” said Vanderlaan. “Not only is my health a concern, but also the health of those around me. The last thing I would want to do would be to pass along the flu to a teammate, family member, or friend.”

Clinics run at Macdonald Island this week from Tuesday until Friday, lasting from 1 PM to 8 PM. A full schedule of immunization clinics can be found at http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/influ/
