Barons acquire Franz, rights to Welykholowa

FORT McMURRAY, AB (November 1, 2014) – The Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) have acquired 1996-born centre Logan Franz (Medicine Hat, AB), and the rights to 1996-born centre Landon Welykholowa (Calgary, AB) from the Calgary Canucks, the team announced today.

In exchange, the Oil Barons send 1996-born forward Anthony Orubor (Calgary, AB) and future considerations to the Canucks.

Franz was the Canucks’ leading scorer last season, recording 42 points (17 goals, 25 assists) in 59 games played in his 17-year old season. The 6’1”, 181lb forward is a graduate of the Edge School, where he scored 28 points in 25 games in his final year of midget hockey in 2012-13.

Franz had scored 7 points (3 goals, 4 assists) in 10 games this season.

“Logan is a young player, but he adds a big body to our lineup,” said Oil Barons head coach and general manager Curtis Hunt. “He’s a second year player who has shown an ability to score. We expect him to be able to step right in and contribute to our team, and he helps us shore up the middle of our lineup a little bit as well.”

The team hopes to have Franz in the lineup for tonight’s home game against the Spruce Grove Saints.

Welykholowa is currently on the roster of the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he has so far scored 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist) in 10 games after playing 1 game with the Calgary Hitmen. Last season, the 5’11”, 182lb forward scored 17 points (9 goals, 8 assists) in 20 games with the Canucks, while also splitting 34 WHL games between the Hitmen and Victoria Royals, where he recorded 5 points (1 goal, 4 assists).

Orubor had scored one goal in 8 games with the Oil Barons in his first year of junior hockey eligibility.

The Oil Barons also released 1997-born defenceman Andrew McCann (Calgary, AB) today. McCann had recorded 1 assist and 10 penalty minutes in 17 games played with the Barons.

The Barons would like to thank Anthony and Andrew for their service to the organization and wish them nothing but the best in the rest of their hockey careers.

The MOB hosts the Spruce Grove Saints for a rematch of last night’s home game, tonight at 8:00 PM at the Casman Centre. Tickets are available at the Casman Centre box office, by phone at (780) 743-5509, or online at tickets.oilbarons.com.
