4 point night for Morison leads MOB past Dragons

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons used a four goal outburst in the third period to defeat the Drumheller Dragons 6-3 Thursday night at the AJHL Showcase in Camrose.

The Oil Barons (4-1-1) offence was once again led by their top line of Reed Morison, Kole Gable and Peter Tomaras who all found the back of the net. The MOB did have a couple of firsts on the night however as Nolen Coventry and Nathan Carl buried their first career AJHL goals in the win.

Coventry would get the scoring started with the lone goal of the first period. The Calgary native fired a high shot from the top of the face-off circle that beat Dragons goalie Hunter Virostek.

The Dragons (3-3-0) turned the tides in their favour to start the second period when Shane Ott and Kaden Hanas scored to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead. Before the period was out the MOB would tie the game while on a powerplay. Morison spotted Tomaras in the right face-off circle and Tomaras beat Virostek with a low had shot past his glove hand.

With the game tied 2-2 in the third period, Liam Izyk created a turnover with the MOB on the penalty kill. Izyk found Nathan Carl heading to the goal and he beat Virostek with a wrist shot into the top left corner. Izyk returned to the line-up after missing the past four games with an injury. He was joined by Rayman Bassi and defenceman Lucas Yovetich who also made their returns after four and five game absences.

The MOB would double up their lead with their second powerplay goal of the night when Morison fed Gable in the high slot. Gable made no mistake, wiring a shot into the top corner.

The Dragons would cut the deficit to one when Brady Risk deflected in his 5th goal of the season but the Barons would respond seconds later. Off a Dragons turnover, Gable raced down the left wing after taking a pass from Morison and snapped a shot just inside the far goal post for his second goal of the period to give the MOB a 5-3 lead.

Morison would round out the scoring with an empty net goal, his 6th of the year. It also capped off a four point night for the second year Oil Baron who finished with a goal and three assists.

Chris Curr picked up the win in goal making 30 saves for the MOB.

Next up, the Oil Barons will take on the Canmore Eagles Friday afternoon in their final game at the annual Showcase. You can listen to all the action on Country 93.3 with Taylor Pope. Pre-Game Show at 3:15 p.m.
