Fort McMurray, Alta. (February 28, 2017) – The mullet may have been the haircut of choice between movie stars, footballers and average joes in the 80s, but the Oil Barons will be bringing it back on March 1st for mental health. For the second year in a row, the Oil Barons will be dawning this infamous “short in the front, long in the back” haircut to support the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Wood Buffalo Region’s March Mullets campaign.
Studies show that mental illness affects one in five Albertans at some point during their lifetime. Currently, CMHA Wood Buffalo offers 20 different programs and services that help Wood Buffalo residents of all demographics cope with stress, anxiety and depression, while manage anger and boost self-confidence.
However, as Emma Jones, interim executive director with CMHA Wood Buffalo points out, many people often do not seek professional support because of fear of being judged by others or because they lack knowledge of available mental health programs and services.
“It’s tough to reach everyone in the RMWB,” said Jones. “It helps when people reach out, but sometimes stigma prevents people from seeking support.”
Jones also notes that CMHA Wood Buffalo has seen a 70 percent increase in demand for its services from Wood Buffalo residents, following the May 2016 wildfires.
“Having the support of the Oil Barons to help raise awareness on the realities of mental illness during the March Mullet campaign can go a long way to encourage people to reach out for support,” added Jones.
Oil Barons President David Fitzgerald offered his support of the partnership with CMHA Wood Buffalo.
“Our region went through a lot last year and continues to go through a lot,” said Fitzgerald. “More than ever, it’s important that people know that the CMHA Wood Buffalo is here to help them and we’re proud to help spread the word of the important work they do.”
