Fort McMurray, AB (November 28, 2018) - The Fort McMurray Oil Barons made of pair of trades on Wednesday, ahead of Hockey Canada's December 1 roster deadline.
First, the Oil Barons traded 20 year-old-forward Jack Hamly (Sherwood Park, AB) to the Sherwood Park Crusaders for 19 year-old forward Tyson Scott (Turner Valley, AB).
Scott has appeared in 27 games with the Crusaders this season and has registered eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points. In 56 games with the Drumheller Dragons last season, Scott registered 13 goals and 31 assists for 44 points.
In 24 games with the Oil Barons this season, Hamly has recorded seven goals and seven assists for 14 points. In total, he has appeared in 135 games in two plus seasons with the Oil Barons and has recorded 83 points (31 goals, 52 assists) over that span.
"As a coach, deals like this are always tough to make because it involves trading a player that has spent a considerable amount of time with your organization," said Head Coach and General Manager Tom Keca.
"That said, we think this trade is a win-win for both teams because it allows us to address a team need by bringing in a 1999-born forward in Tyson Scott who has some size and scoring ability," said Keca. "But it also gives Jack an opportunity to finish his junior hockey career in his hometown on a Crusader team that is very good this year."
In a separate trade on Wednesday, the Oil Barons acquired defenceman Max Struss (Spruce Grove, AB) and future considerations from the Calgary Canucks for forward Jackson Verstraete (Calgary, AB) and defenceman Sean McCloskey (Pitt Meadows, BC).
Struss, 18, has appeared in 26 games with the Canucks this season and has recorded six points (two goals, four assists). In 45 games as rookie last season with the Canucks, Struss registered six assists.
Verstraete, 19, is currently in his second season with the Oil Barons and has scored two goals in 21 games. McCloskey, 18, has scored five points (three goals, two assists) in 22 games.
"As a coaching staff, we feel this trade allows us to get a bit bigger on the blue line, " said Keca. "Max is a young defenceman that competes hard, has some size, and plays a tight checking defensive game."
"Like I've said before, it's always tough to see heart and soul players like Jackson and Sean leave your dressing room. As an organization, we'd like to thank them for their contributions as Oil Barons and wish them all the best with the Canucks," said Keca.
